Kent, Ohio Municipal Court Records
When a municipal case is filed in the Portage County Municipal Court (Kent Branch), commonly called the Kent Municipal Court, the clerk of the trial court creates a compilation of official records for retention, reference, or other legal purposes. These records may be maintained as audio/video, stenographic, or other formats and may also be transcribed in some cases. Together, they constitute the municipal court's official records of legal proceedings.
Because court records are particular to their underlying cases, they integrate information obtained from other public agencies but submitted during the proceedings. For example, arrest reports may be added to criminal case files, while written contracts and purchase orders may be found in civil case files.
Are Kent Municipal Court Records Public?
Yes. Access to Portage Municipal Court records, or Kent Municipal Court records, is governed by the Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio (Sup. R. 11.09 through 11.16). These provisions cover different types of case records, the degree of access to them, and, where applicable, restrictions.
Under the Rules of Superintendence for Courts of Ohio, most court records and documents are open to public inspection; however, certain records are considered confidential or too sensitive for public inspection. Examples include trial preparation records, medical records, and tax information. Additionally, the court typically redacts information or opinions that would directly or indirectly reveal a juvenile's identity, and sealed and expunged court records are not available to the public.
